Microsoft Server Software

Microsoft, the software giant from Seattle, Washington, offers many different types of server software. Some of their software is for running a web server others are for sending email and messages. The two most well known pieces of server software from Microsoft are Exchange Server and IIS or Internet Information Server.

Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Server)

Microsoft's first and only foray into internet web server technology is Internet Information Server or IIS for short. Microsoft IIS has been offered since the days of Windows NT 4.0 Server one of the most solid operating systems Microsoft has ever released. IIS also allowed a very unskilled computer user to set up and operate their company website, email and other web services easily. They may not have been the most secure services, but they worked.

Today, Microsoft IIS is still a very popular server platform with many ISP's and ASP's. With the internet, it is easy to find Microsoft IIS offers in many places.

Microsoft Exchange Server

About the same time that IIS for NT4 was coming out, Microsoft released Microsoft Exchange Server to meet the communications needs of it's Windows users. Exchange Server was an easy to use and configure email and messaging server that could handle thousands of users. Today, Microsoft Exchange Server supports all kinds of great technologies like those used in the Blackberry PDA's and wireless devices.
