eServers - The Best Name in Servers | ||
Personal Web Server PrimerBack when Microsoft realized the internet was going to be a lot bigger than they thought it would be, Microsoft was releasing as much software as it possibly could that related to the internet. Unfortunately for us and them, the software they were releasing was about as stable as a 98 year old woman standing on one leg in the surf. One of the lesser known applications was Personal Web Server. I believe it was originally released with FrontPage98, Microsoft's WYSIWYG web editor for people who did not know HTML from a hot rock. If they could use Word, they could build a site in a few minutes. If they used Microsoft IIS they could get a bunch of "neat" reatures not available for servers that did not support "Front Page" extensions...which was pretty much anything but IIS. Front Page 98Even though I knew my way around HTML, I began using Front Page because it was so darn easy. I was running Windows NT 4.0 Server on a dual P133 machine I had built out of some auction computer parts. It was a lot of fun, but as I had a friend go in and begin to create some perl scripts around my HTML, he began to make me realize this was a terrible idea. Microsoft Front Page was inserting about 4 times the necessary HTML code into the files making them bulky and worst of all, impossible to follow. Don't let something like this waste your time, pick up some books to help get you on the right path from the start. Here are some great books we know will help you: |
